♥ :: Good Wives & Warriors

An illustration partnership between Becky Bolton and Louise Chappell, this duo comprises the Good Wives & Warriors studio in London. And they’re blowing my mind.

These ladies are interested in spaces, in illustrating entire environments or moments within which can be entered into, literally. In this way, I am thinking of them as artists before anything else. Artist is of course a tricky word but I use it here in terms of approach, in the way a viewer (participant) experience is conceived and wholly integrated. I suppose I could argue illustrator/artist with myself all day. But for now: artists.

Anyway, as you can see, they’re versatile in that their venue ranges from corporate clients to galleries around the world to street art. In every project, they seem to engage with the physical space and experience of whomever might be passing by. Patterns, shape/s and high contrasts loom large here, forming surprising and even pleasantly overwhelming compositions.

So why is this important? Well, I think it illuminates an unusual approach to the craft. Bolton and Chappell seem to be responding to the world around them maybe more than trying to interpret it, if that makes sense. They’re creating experience rather than re-creating it. At any rate, they are a prolific studio making totally interesting work. Check them out.
