Cartoonist Laureates?!

Tonight I was browse-stalking the blog of one of my heroes, Alison Bechdel, when I learned that there are precisely two states who host Cartoonist Laureates: Alaska and Vermont. In 2008, Alaska crowned (?) their Laureate at the Alaska State Fair: Chad Carpenter. And on March 10, Vermont will name its first Cartoonist Laureate, James Kochalka, maker of the comic, American Elf.

The Center for Cartoon Studies organized the Vermont award and selected Kochalka. Check out what they have to say about it. This is great progress in the public recognition of illustrators and I hope to see more states on board soon. By the way, if you’re not yet following Bechdel’s blog, you probably want to do so. She’s, well, a hilarious genius, which is the best kind.
